Grandparents and Nutritional Needs

An Asian grandmother holds her young grandchild in her lap as they cook together in the kitchen.

This four-page resource – created by the Nutrition and Aging Resource Center, which is funded by the Administration for Community Living – explains that 2.4 million grandparents in the United States are raising their grandchildren. The rate of food insecurity for grandparent-headed households is more than 60% higher than the rate for all households with children. The Older Americans Act allows Senior Nutrition Programs flexibility to provide services to meet the needs of their community. In addition to sharing background information on grandparents raising grandchildren, this resource offers ideas to help nutrition programs better serve the families.
