Grandfamily and kin caregivers are people who help when a child’s parents are unable to care for them, taking on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren or the children of a relative or friend and making themselves and their home into a soft spot for the children. When a young person comes out as LGBTQ+, their kin/grandfamily caregiver may be the last to know because an LGBTQ+ young person might be fearful of losing that close relationship and unconditional love. The Grandfamilies & Kinship Support Network hosted a webinar on July 25, 2024 during which SAGE and PFLAG National shared strategies from their Supporting Your LGBTQ+ Grandchild toolkit that will guide you on how to help kinship/grandfamilies provide the support that LGBTQ+ youth need.

Presenters:

  • Sherrill Wayland, Senior Director of Special Initiatives and Partnerships, SAGE
  • Liz Owen, Vice President, Strategic Communications & External Relations, PFLAG
